Maronesa beef, with protected designation of origin (PDO) and commercially known as CARNE MARONESA – DOP, is a product of high sensory, nutritional, and hygienic quality. It results from the successful combination of three factors: the Maronesa cattle genotype, a region defined by the Marão-Alvão-Padrela mountain ranges, and an environmentally friendly production method.

MEAT CHARACTERISTICS

Veal

Veal is characterized by its pink color, with some uniformly distributed white fat.

Yearling

Yearling beef is characterized by its light red color, moderate intramuscular ivory-colored fat, and fine-grained muscle with a firm, slightly moist consistency.

Cow

Cow beef is characterized by its dark red color, strong intramuscular ivory-colored fat, and muscle with a firm, moist consistency.

PRODUCTION AREA

The heartland of the Maronesa breed includes two natural regions: Alvão-Marão and Padrela-Falperra in northern Portugal. The geographical distribution spans about 23 municipalities, with 70% of the farms concentrated in Ribeira de Pena, Vila Pouca de Aguiar, Vila Real, and Mondim de Basto.

The breeding area also extends to parts of Alijó, Amarante, Boticas, Cabeceiras de Basto, Celorico de Basto, Chaves, Fafe, Figueira de Castelo de Rodrigo, Marco de Canaveses, Mirandela, Montalegre, Murça, Sabrosa, Valpaços, and Vila Flor.
